The Bristol Legacy Commission (BLC) are not currently funding any community projects.
How we began
The BLC was established in June 2008 to continue the work started during 2007 as part of Abolition 200 (pdf, 193 KB) - in particular the recommendations for change.
The BLC are focused on improving service provision for ethnic minority communities in the following three priority areas between June 2008 and March 2012.
- Cultural representation
- Education and young people
- Health and well being
The BLC guides the city’s efforts to tackle social, political and economic race inequality and will fund a number of projects and strategies designed to change the quality of life for ethnic minorities in Bristol.
Since 2008, the BLC has invested in funding projects in order to react to organisations/individuals who have previously felt excluded from contributing their thoughts, aspirations and visions.
How we work
The Bristol Legacy Commission:
- Will meet eight times a year
- Can decide to invest in projects, research, strategies and programmes that move the priority agenda forward
- Has a role in monitoring the equalities work of Bristol City Council
- Reports to Bristol City Council Cabinet every year
Road Map 2011/2012

Black and ethnic minority voice and influence strategy
How are we and other organisations going to ensure race equality is central to everything we do?
As part of Voscur’s contract to deliver effective services to all communities, the council has asked that there is a strong black and ethnic minority representation within its assembly for supporting and enabling voice and influence. We are working in partnership with Voscur to make this happen.
In addition to Voscur's service changes, the council have asked that their in-house equality forums (including the Race Forum and the Bristol Legacy Commission) have a more effective voice by the end of March 2012. In order for these changes to take place the BLC and Race Forum would like to consult with stakeholders and communities concerned. A consultation will take place during October 2011 to January 2012 with affected communities and stakeholders to ensure they have a ‘say’ in shaping a robust, relevant, supported structure(s) model for race equality in Bristol.
To ensure this consultation will take the correct shape a BME Voice and Influence (V&I) steering group has been set up. Download: BME Voice and Influence (V&I) steering group mission statement (pdf, 59 KB)
