Health and wellbeing
Public Health has arrived at the council
In response to the Health and Social Care Act, Public Health services have been transferred to local authorities. This provides a fantastic opportunity to match important community healthy lifestyles services to ongoing council work.
Public Health services include local community health trainers, lifestyle health checks, commissioned services around mental health and weight management as well as health themes including: Smoking Cessation, specific initiatives around Young People’s and Older People’s Health as well as Healthy Schools and Heart Health to name a few.
The Public Health Annual Report for 2011 (pdf, 2.4 MB) (opens new window) includes information on the whole range of services moving over to the council. Specific data about the health of Bristol can be found on our JSNA and Health Statistics and Intelligence pages.
As Public Health teams start to blend in with our services, we will be including up to date contact information and programme info on various team pages. However, there are some external web sites providing more in depth support and advice for larger health themes, these include:
If you would like general advice on any health concern, NHS Choices has a really useful resource to find out more about everything from Asthma to Yellow Fever. You can also find health services in your area, get the latest information “behind the headlines” and there is a direct link to information for Carers.
