About the school's work
Essential Award: March 2025
Congratulations to Elmlea Schools’ Trust on achieving the Bristol Healthy Schools Essential Award!
Highlights of the school's work:
- taking part in Bristol Pupil Voice Survey and conducting internal staff and pupil surveys
- organising induction weeks for each year group to help pupils settle
- building relationships with parents and ensuring there are parent consultations
- reviewing the school’s policies regularly and sharing them with governors and parents
- using various methods to allow pupils to express their views, such as Pupil Council, circle times, mentors.
- establishing a wellbeing committee, termly meetings and wellbeing questionnaires, ensuring access to counselling and creating social opportunities to make sure staff health and wellbeing is supported
- using various PSHE schemes of work including Jigsaw, NO Outsiders and Jenny Mosely scheme of work, and continuing to reinforce PSHE throughout the curriculum (for example, personal development goals through PE, turn-taking and communication in science.)
The school is most proud of:
- 'our mentor system that we have in school that pairs a key child up with a member of staff to give them support and consistency across all year groups as well as an additional trusted adult in their lives.'
- 'the physical opportunities that we provide at Elmlea.'
- 'our circle time provision, that is held in class each week to address class specific/whole school issues.'
- 'we strive to educate both our children and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as healthy bodies and will continue to support our children’s well-being.'
As a result of working with the Healthy Schools programme the school noticed:
- 'We've worked hard on developing our circle times in class. We've also helped teachers with timetabling this as a regular weekly slot. This has resulted in improved teacher confidence, children feeling happier with sharing their thoughts and emotions and specific time and space being allocated to address current issues.'
- 'We've developed our active time to ensure that the statutory amount of 2 hours PE per week is being fulfilled. This has positively impacted children's physical health as well as their readiness to learn.'
- 'Our pupil voice survey is really beneficial in finding out the mental health of our children and to know which issues to address should they come up in the survey. These issues are addressed within circle times, as assembly themes or on a smaller group/ one to one child and parent basis.”
Well done Elmlea Schools Trust, keep up the good work!
