Long term fostering can be from any age to up until the child or young person reaches 18.

As a long term foster carer, you'll be caring for a child for as long as they need. You may be caring for them until they're 18 years old.

Long term foster care may be for you if:

  • your own children have just left home
  • you'd like to make a longer-term commitment to help and care for a young person until adulthood

You may decide to look after the young person beyond the age of 18, if this is what both you and the young person want.

If long term foster caring for a particular child isn't working for you, we'll work with you to move them to a different foster carer.

Next: alternative care
