In 2023, the Boundary Commission for England Go to https://boundarycommissionforengland.independent.gov.uk/ (opens new window) (BCE) carried out a review of parliamentary constituencies in England Go to https://boundarycommissionforengland.independent.gov.uk/2023-review/ (opens new window).
The number of parliamentary seats in England increased from 533 to 543. The review decided how to divide these seats between England's parliamentary constituencies. Some constituencies were redrawn or renamed.
Proposals and recommendations
The BCE's proposals for the South West region:
- The number of constituencies in the South West increased from 55 to 58.
- By law, every constituency must now contain between 69,724 and 77,062 Parliamentary electors (as of 2 March 2020).
- As far as possible, we have to regard local ties, geographic factors, local government boundaries (as they were known on 1 December 2020), existing constituencies, and minimising disruption caused by the proposed change.
- We will use local government wards as the building blocks for proposed constituencies, but will consider splitting a ward where there is a strong case for doing so that helps us better respect the factors above.
