Find out the hygiene rating of a food business and how it's worked out.

Check a hygiene rating

On the Food Standards Agency website

We use the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme to publish the hygiene standards of food businesses. This is run in partnership with the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Each food business is inspected by one of our food safety officers and given a rating depending on the standards of hygiene found at the time. Ratings go from ‘0' to ‘5'. ‘0' means that urgent improvement is necessary and ‘5' means that very good hygiene standards were found.

The rating is based on:

  • how hygienically the food is handled
  • the condition of the premises
  • how food safety is managed

Each business is given a sticker showing their rating, which they may display in their window.
