Nannies and home carers provide childcare in the children's home and can look after children of any age.

They're not required to hold a childcare qualification, but many do. They can also join the voluntary Ofsted childcare register.

One of the most common ways to find a home-based child-carer is through a recruitment agency. They will usually check that the person has:

  • an awareness of the core skills of childcare
  • a current Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS, formerly CRB) check
  • a first aid qualification
  • public liability insurance

Before employing a nanny, you should make sure that these checks have been done.

A list of nannies and nanny agencies is available on the Bristol FIS Childcare Search.
