How Emotional Literacy Support Assistants can support children at school and which schools have them.

Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) 

An ELSA is a school based learning support assistant. They are trained to support the emotional wellbeing of children and young people at school.  

ELSAs have training and supervision from Educational Psychologists. They are employed by the school and can offer in house support without needing to involve outside agencies or professionals.

Who ELSAs work with

ELSAs work with children and young people who have social or emotional difficulties.  This can be through 1 to 1 sessions or small groups covering: 

  • mental health
  • wellbeing 
  • social skills

All schools have a responsibility to support the mental health and wellbeing of their pupils. Not all schools have an ELSA and they may have different supports in place. If you're concerned about your child speak to your child's teacher or the school's SENDCO.
