Find out if young people leaving care are eligible for council tax relief and how they can apply.

We can grant up to 100% discretionary relief from council tax to care leavers from the age of 18 until their 25th birthday.

We'll apply the discretionary relief only after entitlement to other legislative discounts or exemptions have been applied, except Council Tax Reduction. All Bristol care leavers living in the Bristol City Council area from 1 April 2018 can receive it, regardless of the date of their application.

The discount will apply once the Through Care team has verified that the care leaver is:

  • known to the service
  • registered as a known Bristol City Council care leaver

Our policy

Read our Council Tax Discretionary Relief Policy (pdf, 137KB) for information about:

  • the definition of a Care Leaver
  • criteria and the application process
  • fraud and error

How to apply

Applications must be completed by the care leaver, or a representative authorised by them if required.

Please contact your Personal Advisor who will support you to complete your application.

If relief is granted

You will be informed about this relief through your council tax bill, where the reduced amount owed will be indicated.
