Activities

Nature and wildlife conservation

The Oldbury Court and Frome Valley Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI) covers over 80 hectares, including the River Frome valley and smaller tributary valleys with gorges, steep banks and grasslands.

Broadleaved woodland grows along the River Frome gorge, with ancient trees like small-leaved lime and wild service tree. The ground is rich with plants such as wood anemone and goldilocks buttercup. The river is home to aquatic animals like the dipper and otter.

Volunteers help with important conservation tasks, such as removing invasive species like Himalayan balsam and cherry laurel from the woodlands. Nine hectares of grassland are managed as a traditional hay meadow with funding from Defra. Find out how you can get involved in wildlife monitoring and conservation work
