The Schools Active Travel Team work closely with primary and secondary schools across Bristol to promote sustainable and active travel to and from school via our Modeshift STARS programme and accreditation scheme.
As part of Modeshift STARS, we can provide schools with a range of free themed assemblies, classroom sessions and workshops, all linked both to the school curriculum and active and sustainable travel.
We provide support and guidance to help schools achieve a Modeshift STARS Education National Sustainable Travel award, which consists of 4 levels: approved, good, very good, and outstanding. Schools can use these awards to demonstrate their commitment to promoting sustainable and active travel to school and reducing the number of vehicles outside the school gates.
We offer schools the following free tailored services delivered by our in-house staff:
- advice on how to promote sustainable and active travel within their communities
- support and guidance to help them achieve a Modeshift STARS Education National Sustainable Travel award
- themed assemblies, classroom sessions and workshops such as 'Scooter Skills', 'Be Bright, Be Seen' and 'Air Quality'
- events such as 'Dr Bike' bike maintenance and bike security marking
- resources such as scooter storage and grants for items that help encourage people to travel actively

St Peter's CE Primary was one of the first School Streets to be implemented in Bristol, and running yearly initiatives and events linked to Active Travel helps to cement the positive benefits of a car-free environment outside the school gates, maintaining their Modeshift STARS 'Good' award.

Oasis Academy is a new secondary school currently operating out of a temporary site in Bedminster. Through its involvement with Modeshift STARS, the school has successfully embedded a culture of active travel among the student population and has taken advantage of the Active Travel Ambassadors programme. The school is also working closely with the council to promote free active travel offers, including free bus tickets, train tickets, and cycle hire and repair aimed specifically at parents and carers.

Frome Vale Academy began working with Bristol City Council in September 2024 and has already made great strides in working towards their 'Approved' accreditation, which is the first step on the Modeshift STARS award ladder. The school began by conducting a site audit and running some hands-up surveys of their pupils and staff to understand the current modes of transport. After setting some concrete targets to improve active travel levels, the school has already run Benefits of Active Travel, Be Bright Be Seen and Air Quality sessions among the school cohort, as well as booked Bikeability sessions to help improve cycling rates across the school.

We are excited to team up with Briarwood Special School to help students incorporate active travel into their daily lives. We will adapt sessions for various needs and aim to make BCC projects accessible and inclusive. The program will begin with 'Be Bright, Be Seen' sessions to ensure children travel safely during the darker winter months.
