We offer cycle training to help young people of all abilities learn basic cycling skills that build confidence to ride on the road.

Training can be provided at schools, youth groups, or at the purpose-built Bristol Cycling Centre in Hengrove, Bristol.

Bikeability in schools

Our qualified and experienced Bikeability Instructors have enhanced DBS checks.  The courses take place in playgrounds or quiet local streets.

 Bikeability courses

  • Balance - for ages 3-5 (pre-school and Nursery) Learn how to balance using a balance bike. Fun games to inspire a love of cycling. Activities for Pre-school and Nursery.
  • Learn to Ride - for ages 5-7 (years 1 and 2) Starting to learn to pedal and develop balance needed to cycle independently in small groups.
  • Bikeability Level 1 - for ages 7-9 (year 3 and 4) introduces essential cycle handling skills through fun activities. Level 1 takes place off-road, normally on the school playground. This means that children can learn in a traffic-free environment.
  • Bikeability Level 2 - for ages 9-11 (year 5 and 6) teaches on-road skills to enable children to build their confidence and learn how to make safe local cycle journeys.
  • Bikeability Level 3 - for ages 11 and over (year 7 to 13) develops advanced road-riding techniques to enable riders to cope in all road conditions.

Bikeability at Bristol Cycling Centre

Schools and youth centres can also book sessions and courses at the Bristol Cycling Centre, which is has a large cycle track and a variety of different cycles to ride.

Sessions are designed to make cycling accessible to all, regardless of age, abilities, or needs and include free cycle hire on site.

Cycles available:

  • child trikes and balance bikes
  • 2-wheelers in all sizes
  • trikes, quads, handcycles
  • wheelchair platform cycles
  • side-by-side companion cycles

Session types

  • Balance - for ages 3-5 (Pre-school and Nursery) at Bristol Cycling Centre. Skills training using a balance bike starts to build confidence and balance on 2 wheels using imagination games.
  • Learn to Ride - for all ages. Teaching children to ride without stabilisers.
  • Bikeability Level 1 - for ages 7-9 (Year 3 and 4) introduces basic cycling skills through fun activities in the playground.
  • Bikeability Level 2 - for ages 9-11 (year 5 and 6) teaches on-road skills to enable children to make local cycle journeys.
  • SEND Inclusive Sessions - regular termly sessions of 45 minutes, available every week for a term, in which a school can attend. These sessions can be used to encourage exercise, learn cycling skills or just enjoy getting outdoors.
