The types of full time Alternative Learning Provision settings in Bristol and which ones we work with.

Full time ALP

When an alternative approach to mainstream school may be more appropriate for a child, you could send them on an ALP placement in a DfE registered ALP school. These are longer term, full-time placements for key stage 4 children.

These placements are agreed collaboratively between the child and family, the on-roll school, the local authority and the onward ALP school.

ALP academies

ALP academies were also known as Pupil Referral Units or PRUs.

These provide full time education for children who are permanently excluded from their school.

The ALP academies that we work with are:

Children attend these for approximately 12 weeks, although this can vary depending on individual circumstances, until a new school is identified and secured through the Fair Access Panel (FAP) or through an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) consult, where applicable.

These settings also offer 12 week revolving door programmes when space is available. These are accessed through the Inclusion Surgeries.

Long term placements for key stage 4 children

These are longer term, full time placements than those at St Matthias Academy and Lansdown Park Academy and could be in place for the whole of key stage 4.

Placements here are secured through the Secondary Inclusion Surgeries or through the EHCP consult process.

The DfE registered ALP schools we work with are:

  • Bristol Futures based in Barton Hill and another site based in Kingswood which are part of the alternative provision City School settings at Snowdon Village
  • Learning Partnership West Independent School, which is located near Temple Meads Station and has been offering full time placements for key stage 4 children for a number of years

We have a set number of places at each of these schools for children who need to complete key stage 4 in an alternative setting to their mainstream school.
