Find out how we’re promoting oral health in Bristol and what our priorities are.

Local authorities have a legal responsibility to set up oral health improvement programmes to improve the health of the local people as much as possible.

The Oral Health Promotion Strategy

The Health and Wellbeing Board approved the Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset joint pdf Oral Health Promotion Strategy (1.02 MB)  on 10 August 2016.

The strategy deals with oral health priorities in these areas, based on evidence from:

  • our oral health needs assessments
  • professional feedback
  • public feedback

Our Health and Wellbeing Board approved the development of an action plan that we put together using professional and public feedback.

Why we need a strategy

We want to use this strategy to improve the oral health of all people living in South Gloucestershire, Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and North Somerset. We aim to do this through:

  • setting clear priorities for Bristol
  • identifying areas where we can make improvements to the oral health of all people
  • adding value to services we already have

Strategic priorities and main objectives

The strategy gives a clear framework to support local plans to promote oral health. This strategy aims to reduce inequalities by supporting five priorities:

  • promote oral health through healthier food and drink choices
  • promote oral health by improving levels of oral hygiene
  • improve population exposure to fluoride
  • improve early detection and treatment of oral disease
  • reduce inequalities in oral health
